This module will be assessed both formatively and summatively, formative assessment will be set by the module leader, and detailed in writing in the module handbook and on VLE.  These will include formative feedback on a proposal form, ethical approval form, drafts of the presentation and chapters for the dissertation submission.

Written Assignment

You will research a topic of your choice in depth, giving you the opportunity to develop your own research interests. Drawing on the area you have chosen to study, you will engage with issues of project design and research methods. You will produce a dissertation about your research topic. Throughout you will be supported by one-to-one supervision.
This module enables you to negotiate your own course of study resulting in the completion of a document in the form of a project or dissertation-type piece of work in an area relevant to your course. This is a negotiated syllabus that enables you to develop a particular interest not explicitly covered by a taught syllabus or develop further an aspect of a taught syllabus. In doing so you will engage with issues of project design including choosing appropriate methodological approaches for the chosen research and developing understanding of theoretical perspectives relevant to the discipline(s) in which the work is framed.

Final Year Project for the Social Sciences

An ability to identify, exploit and analyse a range of relevant complex theoretical and empirical materials, including electronic searching and retrieval where appropriate, for an extended piece of work.

A critical review of relevant academic literature

An ability to communicate through an oral presentation on one’s chosen project design and research questions.

An ability to present arguments and data in a logical and coherent written format and to sustain these throughout an extended piece of work.

An appreciation of the methodological and theoretical underpinnings of social science research, specifically as applied to the student’s chosen topic.
