In this module you will explore how physiotherapists are involved in promoting public health and examine health promotion in relation to specific service user groups. In order for you to practice effectively within the health care sector, you need an understanding of the variety of meanings attached to the word “health”. To facilitate this, differing theories and values of health between individuals, communities and cultures will be explored. Methods of enhancing health and related ethical issues will be discussed. You will have opportunity to develop a basic understanding of inter-professional health care delivery within the National Health Service (NHS) and other agencies and how current reforms in health care may affect physiotherapy practice. The concept of professional practice will be discussed.

Learning Strategy

This module will be taught largely through lead lectures, practical sessions and supported by smaller group seminars/tutorials and inter-professional learning work. Students are expected to undertake significant independent study through structured reading in order to supplement and develop their learning. Practice based: the learning strategy will be predominately student centred as a result of negotiation between the student and the clinical educator. Support to both clinical educator and student will be given via the placement handbook and link tutor.

Part B; Practice-based• Each student will, with his or her clinical educator, negotiate a learning contract for the three-week physiotherapy practice based experience. The learning contract will be developed on the basis of the experience offered by the placement and the learning needs of the student appropriate to the level of the student’s performance at this stage of the programme.
