Assessment Task: Critical Evaluation of SEND Policy and Practice (6000 words, 100% weighting) You will identify one learner with SEND and analyse the barriers to learning they experience, with reference to models of disability. This could be an individual known to you from your own work experience with learners with SEND (and must be appropriately anonymised) or can be a theoretical individual based on your own research into SEND conditions and their implications for learning.
You will then evaluate how current policy, legislation and codes of practice enable the practitioner to support this learner and their family. You will critically analyse the use of policy documents, codes of practice and classroom/setting practice, and how the wishes of the learner and/or their family are consulted and taken into account. Your report should consider how effectively these needs have been met, and what alternative action might be taken, within the constraints of current and appropriate policy and legislation.

<p>You will study changing cultural and historical attitudes to disability including, for example, medical intervention from the early part of the 20th century and more recent social changes including the disability rights, human rights and equality, and models of health and disability. You will critically evaluate appropriate policy and legislation and how this has influenced the development of provision and practice. You will explore how our understanding of SEND has developed, and the impact of this on our understanding of inclusion. You will investigate how the needs arising from specific SEND conditions are culturally, socially and historically defined, and what this means for educational practice.</p>
