<p>This module introduces you to some of the fundamental mathematics underlying other modules, such as functions, limits and continuity, as well as proofs and how they are constructed and used. You will develop an appreciation of the different number systems, including complex numbers and links to two-dimensional geometry via the Argand diagram and de Moivre’s theorem. You will also study analytic functions and their applications including calculating integrals and solving differential equations.</p>

Real Analysis

Appraise multiple number systems and understand advanced properties of a function such as smoothness and continuity.

Formulate simple proofs and make use of previously proved results in the construction of a proof.

Discuss the role proofs play in mathematics.

Determine the convergence properties of a sum or sequence; where possible, evaluate a series.

Apply complex variable theory to solve problems such as solving differential equations.

Carry out arithmetic with complex numbers, convert between representations of complex numbers and manipulate expressions using de Moivre’s theorem.

Analyse complex numbers and variables and their advanced applications.
