The English legal system is complex, rooted in history and constantly evolving. This module introduces you to the key elements of the English legal system and also looks at the procedure to enact legislation, an analysis of the anatomy of an Act of Parliament, delegated and secondary legislation and principles of statutory interpretation. A brief history of the evolution of common law is also considered, together with an analysis of the current English court system and the continuing importance of the doctrine of precedent.  In this module you will also learn the methods and techniques necessary for using legal resources, such as cases and legislation to construct legal arguments.

English Legal System and Method

Analyse and evaluate relevant primary and secondary legal sources using different data types, including textual, numerical and statistical information.

Demonstrate an understanding of the key theoretical concepts, principles and rules of public and private laws and relevant methodological approaches taken to the study of law referred to in the outline syllabus, with reference to the English legal system.

Demonstrate an understanding of the sources, institutions and procedures of the civil and criminal justice system of England and Wales.

Undertake directed and self-directed research to retrieve relevant, accurate and up-to-date information from a range of electronic and non-electronic sources including legal databases and the wider internet.

Develop up-to-date knowledge and demonstrate contemporary application of the  English legal system.

Effectively  demonstrate knowledge and understanding theories and concepts relevant to the content of the module.
