Activities providing opportunities for formative assessment will generally be integrated into the teaching and learning process and apply to all components of summative assessment.  The nature of the formative assessment tasks used will be at the discretion of the tutor, to include for example, workshop exercises, quizzes, group discussions.

Assessment 1: Written Assignment

One individual assignment: a research proposal (that may be submitted later as part of the progression to the research stage of the DBA/DPA) (max 5,000 words) weighted 100% (Learning outcomes 1- 10). Tutor reassessment is available. The deadline for this assessment will be approximately 4 months after the taught elements have been delivered.

<p>The module develops students’ abilities to prepare and formulate a proposal for a significant piece of research work. The student will be required to select a topic for investigation relevant to their studies for the broader DBA/DPA thesis, formalise a coherent set of objectives for the study, review and synthesise the relevant academic literature and develop a conceptual framework as well as identify and discuss the philosophical base most appropriate for their research undertaken for the professional doctorate in the broader context of research in the social sciences. The student will also need to evaluate different strategies for data collection and analysis and put forward a formal proposal for undertaking the research. Students will also need to outline timescales and the resources required. The research proposal should be suitable for submission for ethical approval within the subject area or for scientific review. The module will consider general issues relating to developing a research proposal (e.g. philosophy of research and ethics) and will address the procedures and difficulties around specific sections of the research proposal (e.g. methodology and analysis sections).  </p>

Research Proposal

Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of a field of research based on the current academic literature. 

Demonstrate a critical understanding of the management of a research project in the business and management fields.  

Determine a topic of investigation that has a strategic importance to an organisation students are familiar with.

Identify sources of data and information that will support the aims of the project.

Be able to critically evaluate the concepts of epistemology and ontology and their role in research in the social sciences and shaping research design.

Evaluate and defend the project research methodology, including the project structure and research base.

Demonstrate an understanding of the conventions for developing an academic research proposal in the business and management fields.  

Formulate appropriate research questions related to the development of significant new knowledge.

Discuss the aim, scope and objectives of the project and be able to justify the choice of topic and its scope, aims and objectives.

Formulate a proposal for data collection and analysis for scientific review and ethical scrutiny.
