<p>You will explore the rich heritage of song from before 1600, from the courtly love lyrics of the troubadours to the development of polyphonic vocal polyphony that typified the early modern period. The history of song relates directly to performance, composition and theory, as well as to the history of literature, religion, and art history. Many songs were preserved in richly illustrated manuscripts, and you will have the opportunity to learn early notation and prepare your own editions. You may wish to support your work through participation in the Early Music Ensemble.</p>
