<p>In this module you will examine the experience of civilians and the history of relief work and peace activism in the early twentieth century.  You will address contemporary debate on the origins of humanitarianism and investigate the history of attempts to mitigate or end conflict in the modern world through a series of case studies.  You will consider questions of definition, chronology, and selection of source material in order to analyse responses to complex and continually fluxing global challenges.</p>

be able to work flexibly and imaginatively as an individual when faced with a variety of challenging case studies.

be able to demonstrate critical interpretative skills through analysis of primary documents associated with the history of humanitarianism, peace activism and modern war.



be able to communicate clearly and concisely in a variety of ways with appropriate accurate referencing in written assessment.

be able to evaluate and interpret significant bodies of primary material related to the study of British domestic, international and imperial history for the period of the South African, First World War and Spanish Civil War  and reflect upon the methods and ethics of past representation and intervention in these contexts.

be able to offer a critical perspective on historical interpretations of humanitarian history and peace activism through work on a number of case studies pertaining to the South African War, First World War and Spanish Civil War.

be able to demonstrate an appropriate use of information and digital literacy.

be able to demonstrate a wide range of contextual historical knowledge in depth, covering the history of Britain at war in the early twentieth century, as well as the history of foreign policy, humanitarian politics and peace activism, enabling informed reflection on global challenges.
