Assessment 1: Portfolio (including examples)

A submission of the portfolio-in-progress (equivalent to 1000 words (short-story), 35-50 substantial lines (poetry) or a combination of the two.  See tutor for guidance on what constitutes a substantial line for guidance related to word count/line count in combination submissions.

Assessment 1: Portfolio

A portfolio comprising, either:
One or more short stories.  3000 words.Three or more poems. 3000 words or equivalent, deemed to be between 100 and 150 substantial lines. See tutor to clarify the definition of substantial in relation to your proposed submission.A combination of short-story/stories and poem/poems. 3000 words or equivalent.  See tutor for guidance related to word-length/line count in relation to your proposed submission.


Assessment 2: Written Assignment

A reflective and critical commentary of the portfolio presented demonstrating an informed understanding of craft, including matters related to form, technique and style and their relationship with intention, theme and content.

<p>You will develop knowledge and understanding of, and expertise in, the craft of creative writing by studying a representative range of contemporary, modern and pre-Twentieth century prose and poetry.  You will learn how the formal, technical and stylistic elements of creative texts are used to enable, effect and complement intention, theme and content.  You will apply your knowledge by writing in a variety of forms and deploying a range of techniques. You may choose to specialise in writing prose, to specialise in writing poetry, or to write in both genres—again according to your choice. Although course materials will be differentiated to support specialisation, exemplar and stimulus materials will include both prose and poetry. You will demonstrate theoretical as well as practical learning by critically commenting on your own and others’ work in the light of your study of craft.</p>
