Assessment 1: Written assignment (coursework)

The formative element of this module is ongoing. Students will work on written sports articles each week and will get in-class and following-week feedback on their developing skills. There are also discussions during the practical classes on relevant contemporary issues relating to the sports media as appropriate, with particular reference to written coverage in online and print outlets. This builds towards the portfolio for summative Assessment 1, and also helps them prepare for the Assessment 2 newsdays.
Students on journalism degrees, and those on other courses opting in to journalism modules, will work towards a formative practical skills passport of core journalism abilities. This consists of a skills audit logged via a checklist and a blog. The skills align with those set out by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council in their accreditation requirements. Skills developed in this module can count towards the passport, which can also form part of a student’s personal development portfolio.

Assessment 2: Portfolio

Assessment 2 is a portfolio of sports journalistic work produced in preparation for and/or during the series of three live newsdays, which will typically take place at the end of the module.

Assessment 1 is a portfolio. This will include a series of written sports journalism outputs for different platforms. The portfolio must include a court report. In addition, the portfolio will also include a reflective commentary on the student’s work in preparing the portfolio.

AIC2120 - Sports Reporting and Writing

<p>The module develops your abilities in sports journalism, with a particular focus on reporting and writing for the written sports media. You will gain experience of covering sports events on location, allowing you to produce match reports suitable for online platforms and print outlets and to use social media platforms to provide live coverage. You will develop your skills in researching news and feature stories for the sports media, identifying and interviewing newsmakers within sport, and writing news and feature articles and liveblogs in a variety of styles suitable for a range of publishers. There will also be teaching in media law, and you will attend and report on the courts. The modules includes a series of industry-like newsdays, allowing you to work to deadlines in a live environment.</p>
