<p>You will explore concepts such as performing music with regard to the original performing conditions, changing performance trends, changes to instruments, and changes to music notation, and understanding a range of source materials. This module has relevance to performers and musicologists, creating a greater breadth of context to the performance of historical music. You will learn, through this, a range of skills working with and integrating archival materials. Music performance can be included in the assessment process.</p>

be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the major philosophical debate surrounding the practice of historical performance and the practical considerations relevant to it as an applied musicological activity.

be able to assimilate and critically interpret sources to construct a coherent argument that shows an understanding of the major debates around historical performance

be able to present a reasoned and convincing argument, supported by appropriate sources in a spoken, written and/or performed format, demonstrating accurate spelling, grammar, syntax, and punctuation  and (in performance) an level of technical competence appropriate to the chosen repertoire

be able to identify and evaluate a range of appropriate primary and secondary source materials in order to place a musical performance activity in its historical context.

be able to demonstrate detailed knowledge of the main methodologies and sources of evidence that can be used to historically-inform a performance, such as notated manuscript sources, treatises, annotated historical editions, cultural approaches and early recordings.
