Essay analysing the historiography pertaining to the making of the peace after the First World War.

<p>On this module you will study the aftermaths of the First World War and attempts at peacebuilding and post-war reconstruction.  You will also consider the idea of the ‘Greater War’ to examine conflicts that extended beyond the armistice in 1918.  You will investigate the work of new international organisations such as the League of Nations and Save the Children Fund in this period of conflict and flux, as well as the experiences of individuals and cultural responses.  The module’s geographical focus is Britain, but this is set in the context of international movements and global challenges.</p>

be able to appraise the global challenges faced by the League of Nations, humanitarian organisations and state actors in the aftermath of the First World War, and some of their legacies for concepts of global citizenship and humanitarian law today.

be able to clearly and concisely express concepts and arguments in written assessments, with appropriate and accurate referencing , and demonstrating an appropriate level of digital literacy.

be able to evaluate and compare significant bodies of primary material pertaining to case studies of humanitarian and political interventions in post-war Germany and the Middle East, and relate these to wider historical debates.

be able to work flexibly and imaginatively as appropriate, when faced with a variety of challenging case studies and primary sources.

be able to recognise the historical and ethical imperatives for studying marginalised and displaced people and the methodological and ethical challenges of their representation in archives and historical writing.
