<p>You will study the origins of the war, the military course of the conflict, its effect on domestic society and reactions to the war through literature, art and memorial architecture. The focus of the module is on the British experience, though it will consider continental European and imperial experiences too.  Throughout the module, you will also reflect upon public commemoration across the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.</p>

be able to enquire into the construction of archives and collections pertaining to First World War history, and reflect upon their silences.

be able to appraise the significance of the war and the making of the peace on the geopolitics of Europe and the Middle East and reflect on subsequent global challenges.

be able to analyse and critique the portrayal of the First World War in culture and life writing, evaluating their role in the construction of historical narratives over time.

be able to articulate sustained analysis and arguments, with reference to relevant sources from the First World War era and relevant historical works. 

be able to communicate clearly and cogently in writing, using appropriate digital literacy skills. 

be able to make distinctions between the commemoration of the war and the lived experience of participants recorded in primary sources, particularly in terms of race and gender.
