<p>This module will focus on the political and social histories of a number of case studies considering the period from the end of the nineteenth century until the eve of the Second World War. Typical countries you will cover include a selection from a range of European and world powers including the USSR, the USA and France. In each case you will focus on the main political themes of the era such as democracy, fascism and communism and then consider them in wider social and cultural contexts.  You will receive skills training integrated within the module.</p>

be able to co-operate and collaborate with peers to present research findings orally and visually.

be able to state and recount historical knowledge of events and themes in the period c.1880-c.1940 across the different countries studied.

be able to apply historical knowledge creatively to contemporary global challenges such as democracies at risk, imperial legacies, or the impacts of racism and discrimination.

be able to compare and contrast different historical interpretations about issues studied, such as the impacts of imperialism, the outcomes of revolution and the birth of fascism.

be able to evaluate primary material originating from different sources, such as letters, memoirs, proclamations, newspapers reports and newsreels.

be able to start to write clearly structured syntheses and arguments in writing using referencing and appropriate digital literacy.
