Assessment 1: Practical skills assessment

Formative assessment will be given throughout the term, both on practical work and on short video pieces. The sharing/analysis sessions will be devoted to giving and receiving constructive feedback on all aspects of performance-based video creation.

Portfolio of short video works (typically three, each about three minutes long), created with diverse production and editing approaches. (Equivalent to 32 hours of student effort.)

Portfolio of reflective statements: Typically one for each video work, analyzing its process of creation and its specific manifestation of the relationship between performance and screen, with reference to relevant texts and ideas.

This module introduces you to the dynamics of performance for screen, with an emphasis on exploring the relationship between the performer and the camera. The module is designed to integrate theory and practice through a tripartite model. As MAKERs, students will engage in multiple “video labs” using different types of production setup, ranging from established to experimental, and with recording equipment ranging from mobile phones and action cameras to high quality digital video cameras. As CREATORS, students will undertake simple but significant video editing tasks that introduce them to the construction of meaning in screen-based works and the complex relationship between embodied performance and final product. Finally, as THINKERS, students will read relevant critical texts and create a portfolio of reflections that analyse the relationship between performance and screen in the short works they have created.
