Formative assessment is delivered through a bank of centrally-produced tasks, and mock assessments. The bank of formative assessment tasks has been developed using the BALEAP Can-do Framework for EAP, which identifies core skills required by overseas students to succeed in Higher Education in the UK. Students are allocated tasks according to their learner needs in order to track progress, identify issues and provide information to enable students to reflect on their learning and improve their performance. In addition to these tasks, each summative skills assessment has a formative counterpart, which provides students with authentic assessment practice.

Academic English Skills aims to provide thorough training in the language and related academic skills which will enable international students to best achieve their academic potential at the University of Huddersfield.
The specific aims are:
<ul><li>To develop awareness and competency in a range of language-related skills required for successful study at Higher Education level. These include the processes and conventions of academic writing, effective reading strategies, effective participation in seminars and delivery of presentations, and listening to and recording information effectively from lectures.</li><li>To develop the accuracy and range of written and spoken language so as to enable students to use language effectively and appropriately, with clarity and confidence.</li><li>To support students in reflecting on their learning and identifying how to improve their skills and language.</li><li>To ensure students are able to meet the requirements of the UKVI and Huddersfield University through demonstrating a minimum English language level of CEFR B2 in the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking.</li></ul>

Academic English Skills

Express him/herself clearly using a range of language and some complex sentence forms, presenting ideas clearly and responding to lines of argument in writing and speaking. (CA – CEFR (Adapted) at B2 level)

Write a linguistically complex essay in response to a specific question, synthesising and evaluating information and arguments from a number of sources. (C – Council of Europe Framework of Reference)

Use a broad active reading vocabulary to read with a large degree of independence, adapting style and speed of reading to different texts and purposes. (C – Council of Europe Framework of Reference)

Select appropriate reference sources, critically analyse, interpret and evaluate relevant complex information, concepts and ideas. (FHEQ Level 6)

Give a well-structured, detailed academic presentation on a given subject. (CA – CEFR (Adapted) at B2 level)

Follow the essentials of, and take effective notes on lectures, talks, reports and other forms of academic / professional presentation which are propositionally and linguistically complex. (C – Council of Europe Framework of Reference)
