Formative assessment is delivered through a bank of centrally-produced tasks, and mock assessments. The bank of formative assessment tasks has been developed using the BALEAP Can-do Framework for EAP, which identifies core skills required by overseas students to succeed in Higher Education in the UK. Students are allocated tasks according to their learner needs in order to track progress, identify issues and provide information to enable students to reflect on their learning and improve their performance. In addition to these tasks, each summative skills assessment has a formative counterpart, which provides students with authentic assessment practice.  Assessment in term 1 is formative only, to allow students sufficient time to settle in and develop their skills and language.

Academic English Skills aims to provide thorough training in the language and related academic skills which will enable international students to best achieve their academic potential at The University of Huddersfield. 
The specific aims are: 
<ol><li>To develop awareness and competency in a range of language-related skills required for successful study at Higher Education level. These include the processes and conventions of academic writing, effective and extensive reading strategies, effective participation in seminars and delivery of presentations, and listening to and recording information effectively from lectures. </li><li>To develop the accuracy and range of written and spoken language so as to enable students to use language effectively and appropriately, with clarity and confidence.  </li><li>To support students in reflecting on their learning and identifying how to improve their skills and language. </li><li>To ensure students are able to meet the requirements of the UKVI and The University of Huddersfield through demonstrating an English language level of CEFR B2 in the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. </li></ol>

Academic English Skills

Express him/herself clearly using a range of language and some complex sentence forms,  presenting ideas clearly and responding to lines of argument in writing and speaking.

Read with a large degree of independence, adapting style and speed of reading to different texts and purposes.

Research, plan and write an essay systematically developing an argument with appropriate highlighting of significant points and relevant supporting information, and synthesising information and arguments from a number of sources

Follow the essentials of, and take effective notes on lectures, talks, reports and other forms of complex academic presentation.

Give a well-structured, detailed academic presentation on a given subject.

Select appropriate reference sources, analyse, interpret and evaluate relevant information and ideas.
