Synopsis

This project provides you the opportunity to consider the values underpinning global textile practices and identify ways to transform the associated industries, their craft, design and new technologies. In this Major Project you will interrogate new paradigms of practice associated with technological, theoretical and design contexts and the processes of … For more content click the Read More button below. As a culmination of your research and development you will look for opportunities to design by facilitating change and create alternative sustainable textile or surface products or experiences.  This project provides an opportunity for in-depth research into your area of interest and the development of methods that support this. You will work to research, develop, critically reflect, refine and communicate both your methodological approach and your conclusions. You will undertake a comprehensive research project of your own choice to critically engage with emerging issues that will affect the future of textile practices and material innovation. You will build upon your project proposal to develop a final stage framework to realise your outcomes, this may include a group project, subject to negotiation with your specialist supervisor.  This in-depth research project will act as a vehicle to realise new ideas in narrative and expression through materials and new approaches to design thinking.   The realisation of innovative and rigorous concept for textile and surface design, should be underpinned by sustainable and ethical approaches to social, cultural, ecological and professional contexts. This may include new material developments founded on advanced resources for knitted technologies, weave, embroidery and digital/analogue print, and/or  advanced 3D technologies, and surface manipulation.  Design ideation should be supported through digital platforms, advanced textile technologies, and thinking through textiles for diverse contexts and market sectors.  You will present your ideas through an integrated design portfolio that may include, drawing, design and sample development, 2D/3D fabric simulations, finished materials, textile or surface product, technical specifications, digital media and written text.

Learning Strategy

The self-directed focus of this module allows you to experiment, be ambitious and engage with relevant textile experts to support you in your project realisation. You will act autonomously in the planning and implementation of your chosen project, and in this respect the management of your study is at the … For more content click the Read More button below. Lectures at the beginning of this module will help you facilitate the final stages of your project and to manage this process efficiently, individually or as part of a group. You will continue to work with members of specialist staff and will agree the learning strategy and assessment outcomes for your major project. You will be supported by personal tutorials, and small group seminars. Reasonable adjustments will be made for the benefit of students with disabilities in line with the requirements detailed in learning plans provided by Student Services.

Outline Syllabus

As part of the final development stage for your major project, you will reconsider the critical and contextual frameworks for your outcomes, evaluate the currency and direction of your work, justify the research methods used, and assess the approaches taken to realise your outputs. Input and supervisory support will include … For more content click the Read More button below. Examination of topic and objectives for your major project.Confirmation of intended outcomes in agreement with your supervisor. The nature of your outcomes/output: portfolio, exhibition, presentation for display, samples, artefacts, digital display, report, written thesis, journal article, book etc.Negotiation of individual outputs and approach to major project.Identification of a personal philosophical or commercial standpoint for the major project.Identification of specific roles and responsibilities for research and outcomes for a group project option.Identification of suitable approaches to the development of materials and processes for the make and/or manufacture and the requisite textile skills to implement them.Evidence of ongoing evaluation of the evolution of concept research and development of ideas.Industry/Commercial/Business/Agencies/Network ideologies and links.Presentation format and its relevance to your major project. Emphasis will be placed on the realisation of your output(s) in line with the developmental stages of your project proposal.
