Synopsis

In this module you will develop a major, in-depth piece of research work. This includes a largely self-directed study, of what you have gained from the course and, often, you will be able to integrate it with elements from previous studies or professional experiences. It develops your research skills and… For more content click the Read More button below.

Learning Strategy

The self-directed focus of this module requires students to demonstrate a mature and highly self motivated approach, showing rigorous and carefully considered research. In this respect, self-management is at the core of this module. An academic member of staff will be allocated to supervise the research, who will offer guidance… For more content click the Read More button below.

Outline Syllabus

Although largely self-directed, support is provided by the 15 credit Research Methods module (TMA1318) which gives a foundation of methodologies, approaches and research skills (see separate module descriptor). This module gives students a choice of two ways in which to pursue their research projects: Research by written dissertation: The research… For more content click the Read More button below.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will
1.
be able to carefully select and apply specific, measurable and achievable objectives;
2.
be able to effectively analyse and synthesise complex research and design information and explore alternatives.
3.
be able to critically analyse and synthesise complex information from the literature and/or design(s).
4.
be able to systematically approach the construction of a solution to a real-life problem, demonstrate the solution’s applicability and show its theory connections (in case of prescriptive research).
5.
be able to recognise research and/or design tasks as a whole and as decompositions of sub-problems and assemble new solutions with generic applicability.
6.
be able to design and develop conclusions based on evidence including validation.
7.
be able to plan and execute a significant research project, using a variety of techniques to investigate research issues.
8.
be able to critically analyse problems and explore alternatives selectively.
9.
be able to gather primary evidence and use evidence to propose solutions or alternatives.
10.
be able to use evidence in such a manner as to provide for stable and justifiable conclusions, clearly identifying research implications.
11.
be able to present a written piece of work / project which conforms to an agreed layout and format which is consistently clear and coherent.
