Assessment 1: In-Class Test

Formative assessment will be comprised of a mock multi choice online test covering the measurement rules in NRM 2 and CESMM. Feedback will be given on this test to indicate strengths and weaknesses to inform study for the summative test.

Assessment 2: Portfolio

An individual portfolio of a prepared Bill completed based on the information (drawings and specifications of some elements of a small residential building or a simple civil engineering structure) provided.

Assessment 1: Written Assignment

An essay describing the pros and cons of traditional quantification process and how 5D BIM might help to overcome some of the drawbacks of the traditional process and will be carried out under coursework regulations.

<p>Measurement/quantification is a core skill of the Quantity Surveyor. This module will introduce the basic concepts in building and Civil Engineering measurements. As an introductory module to measurements, the aim of this module is to establish the fundamental knowledge about the role, the process, the basic rules and the industry standards of building and civil engineering measurements.</p>

be able to quantify a simple / moderately complex residential building and civil engineering structure

be able to discuss the role of 5D BIM within the context of quantification.

be able to examine the concept of quantification and Bill preparation in detail within the context of Buildings and Civil Engineering structures using different standard methods of measurement.

be able to illustrate the proper use of dimension papers to record simple measurements.

be able to recognise the structure of NRM2 and CESMM4 and evaluate the measurement rules and the taking off process.

be able to apply the measurement rules to generate Bill descriptions and categorise Bill items under different trade sections.

be able to interact with construction drawings and apply the provisions of NRM 2 / CESMM4 to complete quantification of selected elements of small residential buildings and/or civil engineering structures.
