A report on various perspectives and definitions of sustainability, sustainable architecture, environmental concerns and current policy frameworks to drive the sustainability agenda.

<p>Carbon emissions, sustainability and energy efficiency are current key concerns worldwide. Construction industry and the built environment are among the biggest contributors to Carbon emissions and consumes significant amounts of energy on a daily basis; hence considering environmental impact and driving the sustainability agenda hit high within the construction industry agenda. Within this context, one of contemporary roles of the Architectural Technologist and Building Surveyor is to promote sustainability in new construction designs and improve the existing building stock where possible and appropriate. Accordingly, this module will aim to further develop your ability to comprehensively recognise the principles of sustainability in construction and their application in design and construction. With that, you will be able to reinforce and appreciate your understanding of the relationship between sustainable design and construction processes.</p>

be able to recognise various definitions of Sustainable Design Development and Sustainable Construction

be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge on principles of sustainability evaluation tools such as BREEAM and its impact on the construction decision-making (such as materials selection).

be able to produce indicative evaluations to various designs using sustainable indicators such as BREEAM.

be able to appraise various policies and regulations driving the sustainability agenda and evaluate implications of policy frameworks for building a more sustainable built environment.

be able to debate about complex and controversial aspects of sustainable building design and construction.

be able to demonstrate the ability to carry out EIA using common environmental impact tools.
