Assessment 1: Written assignment (coursework)

Feedback will be delivered in both written and verbal forms and, where appropriate, through use of online methods.
In addition to ongoing informal feedback and evaluation as part of the teaching process, formally structured tutorials will be scheduled to allow appropriate feedback and clear guidance for development. These will take the form of formative feedback prior to the final submission of assignments as part of the summative assessment.

Written Assignment

Assessment 1: Portfolio

A design portfolio that demonstrates a developing personal style and includes a range of visual and skills-based work, such as media exploration, research sketchbooks, mood/concept boards, CAD applications, design development, and illustrations. Manipulation of blocks into accurate patterns and prototypes that demonstrate appropriate sewing methods and fabric utilisation. Supporting annotated technical file that includes pattern manipulation experiments, manufacturing samples and a production/technical data.

Portfolio

<p>Fashion Design Practice 2 is made up of two distinct elements - design and manufacture; however, these elements are assessed holistically as one cohesive body of work. Throughout this module, you will strengthen and develop your previously acquired skills and foundation knowledge concerning the principles of fashion design, pattern cutting and garment construction. Combining these elements aims to develop fundamental aesthetic considerations to process and creative solutions, alongside practical skill development.</p>
<p>In further detail, this will include:</p>
<ul><li>Visual inspiration and forecasting direction to refine concepts relevant to the design process</li><li>Identification of trend, colour, silhouette and market awareness and distinctions between womenswear and menswear design, cut and construction</li><li>Continuation of the skills of drawing and illustration relevant to fashion design</li><li>Block manipulation and pattern production</li><li>An appreciation to creative use of drawing and illustration, proportion and line in style translation as integral components of garment design and production processes</li><li>Distinctions and considerations between fabric types, structures, trimming qualities and detailing in relation to fashion design and creative sampling</li><li>Foundation skills in use of specialist facilities, sewing methods, toiling and garment making</li><li>Creative and technical interpretation of design concepts into toiles and sample garments</li><li>Problem solving and solutions relating to forms of design, pattern cutting and garment construction</li><li>Continuation of the skills needed to create basic garment technical packages.</li><li>Continued reflective and self-evaluative processes.</li></ul>

be able to demonstrate extended awareness of the use of specialist machinery and suitability of materials by completing toiles, garments and supporting material which identify the appropriateness of stitch types and seam finish for specific purposes and also negotiate solutions.  

be able to demonstrate the use of proportion, line and contemporary styling through the translation of individual design concepts to pattern manipulation techniques, flat production patterns and supporting material which utilise accurate measurements.

be able to evidence use of a comprehensive range of media including CAD to record visual stimuli in an individual and sensitive manner relevant to fashion design.

be able to demonstrate initiative and awareness of personal and professional skills and the articulation of ideas and information within a fashion context, through independent and collaborative practice and reflection, review and evaluation.
