A written report addressing the learning outcomes related to the sections on construction business at industry level and project level.

Assessment 2: Written Assignment

A reflective report evaluating the roles, responsibilities and skill requirements of Architectural Technologist, Quantity Surveyors, Building Surveyors or Construction Project Managers (depending on the selected course) and their interaction with other professionals in the industry. Also, discuss the role of professional bodies for the selected professions. As a part of this, a self-reflective PDP is to be prepared based on a SWOT analysis to identify the individual development priorities.

An overall understanding about how the construction industry works is essential for all the students who perceive a career in the construction industry. This understanding lays the foundation for you to, not only recognise your role within the construction process, but also to recognise and appreciate the work of other professionals within the industry. Within this remit, the scope of this module is to introduce the overall construction business to you. The module content is structured into three distinctive but interrelated areas, namely, business at industry level, business at project level and business at individual level.
Business at industry level:
Within this part of the module, you are presented with industry level details such as the nature of the construction industry and its place within the national economy; roles, responsibilities and business perspectives of different types of clients (investors, developers, public authorities, etc.); construction from the investment point of view and from the social responsibility point of view; and national and international priorities related to construction such as sustainability and energy efficiency. Further, this part also discusses the roles and the responsibilities of the construction industries in making the built and human environment resilient to natural and man-made disasters.
Business at project level
This part of the module focuses on the construction project lifecycle. The content within this part will cover the lifecycle of a typical construction project; types of construction projects; project stakeholders (client, the design team, contractor, etc.), their roles and responsibilities; project success factors; team working; organisational and management structures of construction projects. Building materials in modern construction projects are also discussed giving reference to the global sustainable agenda.
Business at individual level
This part of the module is dedicated to explore the individual roles of construction professionals with specific emphasis given to the role of Architectural Technologists, Quantity Surveyors, Building Surveyors and the Construction Project Manager. Basic skill requirements of construction professionals are discussed here and having identified skill requirements, you are expected to create your Personal Development Plan (PDP) within this module.

be able to understand the basic functions of each of the disciplines such as of tendering process, measurements and estimating, planning and building regulations and project programming and scheduling.

be able to formulate communication strategies, information management and evaluate the overall health and safety considerations of construction projects.

be able to demonstrate a knowledge of the nature, processes, basic operational parameters and success factors of construction projects and the roles of Architectural Technologists, Quantity Surveyors, Building Surveyors Architects, Engineers and Construction Managers, both within the local context and internationally.

be able to recognise the nature of the construction industry in the national and the international contexts, its economic and environmental sustainability impact, and global priorities and challenges. 

be able to investigate different roles and responsibilities and skills requirements of different professionals within the construction industry and identify your areas for improvements to succeed in your selected pathway (following the PDP process). 

be able to to assess roles and business objectives of construction clients and other project stakeholders and appraise their impact on the construction industry.

be able to assess the role of professional bodies (eg RICS, CIOB, PAQS, BQSM, etc).
