SHC4010 - Interpretation of Forensic Evidence

The relationship between the forensic scientist and the justice system will be explored with a view to addressing aspects of criminal and civil law. Aspects of presentation of evidence as well as the role and responsibility of the expert witness will also be explored.
The requirements of quality systems will be considered within context of presenting robust evidence; as well as the considerations of ethical practice.

Criminal Law and Presentation of Evidence

have experience of the legal/justice environment and demonstrate their critical understanding of the role of the forensic scientist in that context.

critically assess the contribution that they may make to the judicial process in any particular circumstances in which they find themselves.

have critical understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the expert witness, particularly with respect to disclosure.

produce a expert witness level statement (simple or complex) that complies with Crown Prosecution Service Guidelines.

have critical understanding of the relationship between the forensic scientist, the investigating officer and the judicial system which makes use of their expertise.
