Synopsis

This module will build on knowledge and skills introduced in the first year of the degree programme. The module will provide opportunity to further develop fundamental clinical techniques including history taking, preliminary examinations, refraction, slit-lamp, ophthalmoscopy and record keeping, and begin to integrate these techniques into a basic ophthalmic assessment … For more content click the Read More button below.  The module will also consider factors involved in real-world visual performance including lighting, visual standards and occupational requirements such as eye protection, VDU use, colour vision and driving.  This module will also develop the concept of Optometric practice in the wider community, considering the public awareness of ‘eye health’ and the necessity for regular assessments, and consider the use of eye-care strategies in the community.

A variety of activities will be used to provide the desired learning experience. Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will

demonstrate knowledge of a variety of clinical techniques and understand when these are applied in Optometric practice.

demonstrate the ability to provide advice to patients regarding the visual aspects of their work/lifestyle activities and to have knowledge of relevant standards.

understand a range of factors affecting eye health and demonstrate knowledge of different eye-care delivery strategies.
4.
collect accurate data regarding the structure and/or function of the eye using a range of clinical techniques and record the results appropriately.
5.
reflect on their own development with regard to their professional and clinical abilities.
