This module enables a student to understand the different approaches to and methods of evaluating proposed development projects and to apply specific evaluation techniques.  In particular, it includes consideration of spatial modelling and impact assessment procedures and of cost-benefit analysis.
The module also explains why Geographers need specialist computing packages. Major topics include the need for, and nature of, spatial computing; an introduction to Geographical Information Systems (GIS); a series of GIS practicals; and an introduction to Remote Sensing.
The course is delivered on a student-centred basis through a series of workshops and assigned tasks. Students are provided with a set of resources to allow them to complete these tasks. Extensive use is made of the internet as a means of researching topics. The module has a strong practical element and most of the timetabled hours are allocated to practical workshops.
The module is assessed by a report and by submission of a ‘workbook’ in which students record the results of their research and practical exercises.
