This module introduces students to the debates concerning development in the developing world, with particular reference to the African experience. The aim is to explore the experience of development from the perspectives of a number of different groups involved in the development process, including farmers and pastoralists, urban dwellers, government planning officials and development workers in NGO and official aid agencies. In order to understand the perspectives of these different stakeholder groups a number of different methods are employed in addition to lecturing. These include analysis of video material, evaluation studies, exercises with development project documents, and a range of case studies.
The module starts by exploring definitions of development and approaches to the practice of development. It then considers the importance of communities in the development process from both a cultural perspective and from the point of view of their contributions to development process through participation and local knowledge. The organisation of development activities in project and programme forms is discussed as well as the issue of how to provide technical assistance without undermining local responsibility. A major section of the module focuses upon rural development problems, especially related to agricultural commercialisation and the interactions between environment and population growth. Experience of urbanisation and emergency relief are also considered within a curriculum which is subject to amendment through negotiation.
