<p>This module is designed for students who are in Year 3 of an Integrated MChem/MSci. Part of this module is specific to the organisation in which the student is working and involves them carrying out a review of the organisation, and a review of the sector that the organisation operates in (e.g. the pharmaceutical industry, analytical service providers or the higher education sector). Alongside this, students will carry out a series of assignments designed to improve their wider understanding of certain aspects of science-based businesses such as green chemistry/environmental issues, project planning and scheduling and marketing.</p>

Business Aspects of Science

have an appreciation of the type of work carried out at the organisation and how it relates to local conditions, including chemical engineering and chemical technology skills, workforce maturity, markets, environmental legislation, plant design, research and development, intellectual property entrepreneurship and innovation, etc.

have a comprehensive knowledge of their organisation and its position within its sector, globally and within the UK.


have a good understanding of business aspects of science and the factors which influence commercial and legislative decision making processes in the sector within which their organisation operates.

present complex ideas and analyses to a mixed audience in written presentations.

use this knowledge to develop original ideas for potential new markets or product lines, carry out appropriate analyses, such as SWOT and PEST(LE), in support of their ideas, and justify their ideas with clearly defined judgments and conclusions.
