Students will have the opportunity to undertake location recording, DAW session setup, track lay and synchronisation, dialogue recording and ADR, and mixing with supervision and guidance leading to submission of assessed work in these areas.

1. The creation of a DAW based session/project layout suitable for the entire post-production process including complex routing and processing facilitating the clear organisational planning of tracks and audio assets.2. Acquisition and creation of a range of sounds for the film clip using appropriate location recording, editing techniques and synchronization in order to produce the ambience bed and detail of the locations in the film clip.

a. Acquisition and creation of a range of sounds for the film clip using appropriate location recording, Foley and sound design techniques with accurate editing and synchronization in order to produce all nor ambience sounds in the film clip. This includes the recording of dialogue/ADR, footsteps (FS) spot effects and other sound effects (SFX). All sounds should be track-laid with appropriate editing and synchronisation. b. Creation of a pre-mix and final mix in the 5.1 surround format. The implementation of the VESPA (Volume, EQ, Spatialisation, Panning, Automation) model should be extensive and effective.c. A 1500 word production report including critical evaluation detailing all aspects of the technical and creative processes and their theoretical underpinnings. This should be presented in the note pad (or equivalent) of the DAW used.

<p>This module will introduce advanced concepts, theory and practical skills in the use of a broad range of equipment used for recording and mixing sound for Film and Television. The focus will be on Sound Design, Foley, Sound Effects, Dialogues recording and editing, track lay, and mixing in stereo and surround. Practical experience of location sound recording will be gained and will form an integral part of the module and its assessment. You will develop your ability to track lay, synchronise and edit audio along with video in a DAW and develop advanced post-production editing and mixing techniques. Discussions of the theoretical, philosophical and creativity aspects of the area will underpin the module content in lectures.</p>

Sound for Film and Video

Apply audio capture, creation, editing and manipulation and synchronisation methods and techniques in order to create an effective film output and maintain ‘suspension of disbelief’.

Demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of theories relating to human perception of foreground and character sound when synchronised with the moving visual image and how these might impact differently upon methods employed in the editing, manipulation of sound for film and TV.

Demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of theories relating to human perception of background and ambience sound when synchronised with the moving visual image and how these might impact differently upon methods employed in the editing, manipulation of sound for film and TV.

Demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of key aspects of film and TV audio practice impacting upon the planning, acquisition and track-lay of sound for film and TV with regards to a) background and ambience sounds and b) foreground and character sounds.

Create and effectively use a DAW session/project setup that demonstrates application of technical and theoretical principles with suitability for the specific audio acquisition and editing needs of a provided film clip.

Produce a pre-mix and subsequent final mix using surround sound mixing techniques including the use of music “temp tracks”.
