EnABLE group exercises will offer formative assessment and feedback in a range of ways. Informal peer to peer feedback will be promoted within groups and between groups at the end of the exercise. In addition, facilitators and experts will offer feedback on interim performance on planning and construction exercises. Verbal feedback will also be available as part of the competition or presentation expected at the end of the exercise.

Taught material will contribute an element every week to the SAIL programme (Score As I Learn) submitted via the VLE platform. 11 x 15 minutes weekly assignments (quizzes). Each assignment (quiz) will be worth 3%. Taking the best 8 out of 11 scores.

The module will provide you with the opportunity to become competent in the skill of technical illustration using both 2D and 3D CAD. Combined with the ability to select appropriate engineering materials for an engineering component and a design of a simple engineering artefact you will acquire the necessary skills to apply in a design process. As part of the learning activities you will undertake a series of integrated graded exercises which will allow you to express your ideas graphically to other engineers through the medium of CAD. Basic engineering artefacts will allow you to consolidate your understanding of the role of assembly and detail manufacturing drawings. Through the carefully constructed assignments the module introduces you to the concepts of computer assistance for engineers, and teaches the basic skills of 2D draughting and 3D modelling with CAD packages.

Engineering Communication and Materials

Demonstrate 2D draughting in BS 8888 by both manual methods and using a standard CAD package and a basic working knowledge of 3D CAD.

Work as an effective team member to generate and present a solution to an engineering challenge.

Make informed decisions on the selection of materials.

Design a basic engineering artefact including the selection and use of common engineering components and materials and to create engineering drawings which could be used for its successful manufacture.

Describe and use common engineering vocabulary and terminology.

Describe and demonstrate the differences in the basic mechanical properties of materials and basic strengthening mechanisms for metals.
