You will address the ways in which the contemporary processes of globalisation impact upon health and social policy, as policies within one country can no longer be understood without reference to the global context in which the country finds itself. This is particular pertinent to the fields of health and social care, in relation to social issues such as HIV/AIDS, child labour, changing patterns of climate and the recent swine flu pandemic. In attempting to understand social policy in a global context, you will draw on a range of perspectives to examine crucial topics, such as welfare regimes, social justice, agency of provision and re-distribution of economic activity. You will draw on examples of current global situations to develop relevant debates.  

Learning Strategy

In addition to lecture input, students will take part in a number of seminar workshops, involving presentations and debates, which will contribute to their formative development and assignment preparation.
