Learning Strategy

Teaching and learning are designed to offer students a variety of learning opportunities that align with the module learning outcomes and offer realistic and effective preparation for progression. They aim to be inclusive of diversity, to allow students to actively engage in learning and be successfully assessed in a variety of ways.
Learning and teaching is delivered on a one-to-one basis within the workplace.
Assessment aims to support learning and to measure achievement. All learning outcomes are assessed, and the mode of assessment is specified for each outcome. Assessment is via summative review of a Personal Development Portfolio.

The Specialist Care Module-Anaesthetic Practice Personal Development Portfolio includes the clinical competencies required for this module include the following areas of practice.

• Preparation and checking of anaesthetic equipment
• Preparation, checking and use of perioperative equipment
• Working safely within the clinical area
• Receiving and preparing patients for anaesthesia
• Anaesthetic Drugs
• Physiological Monitoring
• Assisting the clinician(s) in securing the patient’s airway
• Assisting the clinician(s) in providing care and support during anaesthetic procedures
• Transfer to theatre and position patients for surgical procedures
• Assisting the clinician(s) in maintaining Fluid Balance during anaesthesia and surgery.
• Anticipation, recognition and management of hazards, adverse conditions and emergencies.
• Assisting the clinician(s) in providing care and support during reversal of anaesthesia and preparation for and transfer to PACU
• Effective communication skills
• Professionalism including; scope of practice, time management, record keeping, confidentiality and non-discriminatory practice
• Managing/Co-ordinating the perioperative environment including; list management and monitoring and evaluating care delivery
• Non-Technical skills of; situation awareness, teamwork and communication and task management.

On successful completion of this module students will

Critically reflect, constructing an action plan identifying and addressing areas of practice development immediately following completion of study.

Demonstrate leadership and team-working within the anaesthetic environment.

Demonstrate a professional approach to competent anaesthetic care.
