Practical Skills Assessment

Situated around the HEE core capabilities for advanced clinical practice, you will study the theoretical principles required to carry out effective assessment, diagnosis and management of undifferentiated and undiagnosed conditions in addition to pre-diagnosed conditions related to body systems. You will explore how to generate differential diagnoses in addition to making informed collaborative decisions about the management of your patient’s presentation. Emphasis throughout the module will be placed on a person-centred holistic approach to assessment with development of management plans from which to provide optimum care. You will develop your knowledge, understanding and competence in the context of your clinical practice. To develop and demonstrate your competence, you will be working in a clinical setting and your progress in meeting national core capabilities will be assessed whilst working under the supervision of an appropriately qualified Clinical Educator.

Core Clinical Assessment, Skills and Decision-making for Advanced Practice

Recognise red flags relating to diseases/conditions in the list of differential diagnoses, so that the patient’s life and well-being are protected.

Critically evaluate obstacles to the effective assessment and management of patients with serious or common conditions, and evaluate strategies for overcoming them.

Demonstrate the ability to carry out physical examination of body systems and mental health assessment of patients in clinical practice.

Critically appraise contemporary research, national and local guidelines and evidence base relevant to the diagnosis and management of diseases/conditions related to the body systems studied during this module.

Demonstrate the ability to assess patients with common or serious conditions by taking relevant clinical histories, formulating provisional and differential diagnoses and undertaking appropriate clinical examinations and tests related to own area of practice.

Critically appraise and synthesise relevant anatomy, physiology, epidemiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology knowledge, and apply these to the assessment and management of care of patients with serious or common conditions drawing on contemporary research and policy sources.

Undertake a lead role in planning, implementing and evaluating the holistic, person centred care of patients, acknowledging own limitations and when a patient should be referred.
