You will integrate your foundation knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the nervous system developed in Year 1, with conditions affecting the nervous system. You will also consider the physiotherapy treatment of people with neurological dysfunction. You will examine the assessment and management of service users who have a range of neurological symptoms. You will relate the clinical features to the underlying pathophysiology of the neurological condition.
This module will enable you to further integrate foundation studies in neuroanatomy, neurophysiology with neuropathology and the physiotherapeutic management of individuals with neurological dysfunction.
The module provides you the opportunity to apply your knowledge of normal neurophysiology and basic pathology to the study of disease processes within the nervous system, and the effects upon the individual. Service users and carers will contribute their experiences of living with neurological dysfunction at various points in the module. Development of clinical reasoning skills is supported by the emphasis on the integration of theory and practice within the module. The influence of the clinical setting on the individual and the therapeutic process is introduced.
The module content delivery also encompasses the following key themes: • Development of manual skill, clinical reasoning and critical analysis • Understanding of the various models of health with application to physiotherapy • Health promotion and empowerment of service users • Integration of inter-professional and inter-agency work within teaching and learning to reflect changing clinical practice within a diverse society • Development of skills to enable lifelong learning.
