This module provides the opportunity for you to build on your knowledge of midwifery and your understanding of conditions and interventions that can adversely affect pregnancy, childbearing and the postnatal period. You will explore the impact of evidence based practice and risk assessment in managing the needs of women, their babies and families, considering the ethical and professional issues through coursework. You will also have the opportunity to develop practical skills through simulation, which you will demonstrate through passing a practical exam.
In this module you will be encouraged to build on prior knowledge of normal midwifery, in order to deepen your understanding of a variety of conditions and interventions which can adversely affect the process of childbearing. The evidence underpinning midwifery practice in all aspects of reproductive health will be developed and the principles of care and their implications for women and the neonate will be explored and discussed. You will be expected to utilise all sources of midwifery knowledge to examine current care and the management of deviations from the norm.

Students will be required to pass all elements of assessment to gain credit for the module but only the client profile will be graded. This meets the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Critically assess the role of the midwife within the multidisciplinary team in the provision of care of women and their babies with complications in pregnancy and childbirth. 


Demonstrate appropriate clinical skills in the management of a series of complex situations during simulated work stations.

Evaluate the impact of evidence based practice and risk assessment in managing complex maternal, fetal and neonatal needs.

Assess the significance of deviations from normal reproductive anatomy and physiology, and how these may be detected and managed in the mother, fetus and neonate.

Assess, plan and critically evaluate midwifery and family centred care, demonstrating consideration of cultural, social, psychological, ethical and legal issues.
