This module will be assessed both formatively and summatively. Formative assessment will take place within class and will involve both tutor and peer feedback on student questions being prepared for the reflective assignment, and on plans for the final essay.

The module explores how clinical psychologists make use of psychological theory and research in the real world. The teaching is delivered by both practising clinical psychologists and University tutors and will take place via lectures and online learning. Both the face-to-face and the virtual teaching are designed to provide the opportunity for you to discuss contemporary clinical practice with practitioners.
The module will enable you not only to explore the nature and history of contemporary clinical psychology, but also to evaluate critically the contribution that clinical psychologists can make within particular settings. The challenges that clinical psychologists face in attempting to facilitate psychological change with diverse groups of clients and staff will be explored and you will be introduced to critiques of applied psychology and invited to explore their relevance for clinical psychology.

Exploring Clinical Psychology

Critically evaluate the contribution that clinical psychologists make to a specific area of health or social care. 

Discuss the relevance of theoretical and research literature to real world accounts of psychological practice from individual practitioners.

Outline and explain clinical psychology assessments and interventions carried out within a specific area of health or social care. 

Develop useful questions in order to interrogate the relationship between theory and practice .
