You’ll explore the field of Investigative Psychology and cover a wide range of areas, including the work of Professor David Canter, Offender Profiling, Geographic Profiling, Investigative Interviewing and the Detection of Deception. This module has been designed to introduce you to developments within the field of Investigative Psychology (IP). Investigative Psychology is the scientific discipline concerned with the psychological principles, theories and empirical findings that may be applied to investigations and the legal process. Through a series of lectures and interactive discussion, you will actively engage with historical case information, debate controversial issues within the field and critically examine the future direction of IP. This module offers a broad introduction to the field of IP, including, but not limited to, some of the following areas:
 • Dirty Data - Turning Evidence into Data • Approaches to Offender Profiling FBI v IP • Understanding Geography and Crime • Investigative Interviewing • Detecting Deception - Polygraph, Amnesia • The Criminal Narrative - Offenders Life Stories • Pathways to Terrorism • Classifying Crime
You will be given the chance to critically evaluate the theoretical foundations of IP and the application of IP to the Investigative Process. Various types of crimes will be presented to help facilitate an understanding into how IP can contribute to the Investigation of Crime. From Acquisitive Crime and Terrorism to Sexually motivated offences and Murder, case studies will be used throughout the module to facilitate an understanding of how this area of research relates to the real world. This module also serves as a platform to further study on the MSc in Investigative Psychology in the University of Huddersfield. The central content of this course is not restricted to studies of crimes in the UK but covers offences spanning the globe which reflects the general contribution of IP worldwide.
