You will be provided with a foundation knowledge within the area of nutrition, bioenergetics and metabolism. The relationship between what we eat and nutrition will be explored by looking at the importance of the food groups that make up the diet and current nutrition guidelines. You can then use this knowledge to look at the nutritional needs of various groups in the community such as during pregnancy, in children and in the elderly. The relationship between diet and disease will also be addressed for example obesity and heart disease. You will also look at the role of macronutrients in the diet in terms of how energy is provided and metabolised.  You will also look at topical issues such as the role of alcohol, food additives and food labelling. An introduction to a dietary analysis computer programme will be conducted whereby you will have the opportunity to analyse your own diet.

Understand the significance of a nutritionally balanced diet and the application of this knowledge to the requirements of specific individuals and groups in the population.

Describe the main functions, requirements, sources, deficiency and toxicity of the macro and micro nutrients and how energy is produced and metabolised.

Understand the implication of diet in the prevention and cause of disease.
