Students will have the opportunity to attend and receive tutor comments on a formative practical assessment (20 minutes)

Practical Skills assessment 

Both components must be passed at 40% in order to gain credit for the module. This is a requirement of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (2018) Standards framework for nursing and midwifery education.

HFM1015 - Introducing Newborn and Family Health - Apprenticeship

<p>This module introduces you to the midwife’s roles and responsibilities in promoting and supporting family and newborn health and wellbeing. You’ll learn about fetal development and physiological adaptation to newborn life with a view to working alongside parents and health and social care colleagues to assess, plan, implement and evaluate family-centred care. This includes screening and diagnostic testing, as well as safeguarding mothers and babies. You’ll have the opportunity to learn how you can support parents in building nurturing relationships with their newborn baby, considering their cultural, psychosocial and health education needs. You’ll also explore the importance of supporting safe, informed and responsive infant feeding and protecting breastfeeding. Students will experience shared teaching with learners on the equivalent module on the Midwifery Degree Apprenticeship course.</p>

Introducing Newborn and Family Health

Explain the importance of parent and newborn mental health and well-being, positive attachment, the transition to parenthood and the factors that impact on these.

Explain the anatomy and physiology of fetal development, transition to extra-uterine life, the newborn infant, very early child development and breastfeeding.

Apply evidence-informed understanding to support safe and effective infant feeding.

Describe the midwife’s role and responsibilities in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the universal and family-centred care needs of the newborn.

Holistically assess the immediate and on-going health and well-being of the newborn.
