Discussion and critique of the summative assessment deliverables during their development that include the finished design artefact and completed assets, its sketchbook and overall participation in class crit-sessions and peer consideration of ideas.

Assessment 1: Focused classwork observations

Formative assessment and verbal feedback will be offered throughout the module in a staged program of interim, staff to student, peer to peer critical review sessions (also known as class crit-sessions). Regular inspection of the learners’ work (and progress) will be made by module tutors and appropriate verbal feedback will be given. Students are therefore expected to document this feedback and utilise this for their assignment development and critical conclusions.

Assessment 1: Portfolio

Prepare a portfolio which demonstrates the reasoned application of technologies and techniques in the development of a collection of visual identity assets, including sketchbook of concept work, branding design and set of web designs.

<p>This module provides you with an introduction to the subject of visual design. Throughout the module you’ll be introduced to core design principles, processes and terminology. You will also explore a number of case studies and implement/ apply a basic design process, aiming to build an individual portfolio of design work as you go. You&#39;ll be given the opportunity to develop your own design briefs that will require you to research and evaluate a defined problem and be expected to propose an original ‘design concept’ (solution), present your ideas to others for feedback, engage in design criticism, produce a range of original assets (using appropriate industry-standard software) and evaluate your design solution in context.</p>

Introduction to Visual Design

Develop and implement appropriate visual design strategies for screen.

Recognise the basic requirements for image creation and manipulation in digital media.

Generate and process digital imagery appropriate to the output medium.

Know and articulate basic concepts and stages behind the design of visual elements for a variety of output mediums (e.g. for screen and/or print).

Understand general principles of visual design for screen in relation to the Graphical User Interface. 

Take into account the relationship between visual design and interaction/ navigation/ information content design.
