Assessment 1: In-Class Test

A range of formative devices, typically in-class tests, formative feedback on summative assessments, reviews of files and folders, etc., will be used by tutors to aid learning.  The exact nature of these assessment devices is at the discretion of the module leader and will be tutor and/or peer-assessed.

Assessment 1: Written Assignment

The individual assignment will consist of a written exercise which may be an essay, topic briefing, reflective learning journal, article critique, case note, statutory interpretation or judgement.

Written assignment

This module critically explores the Human Rights Act 1998 and its implications for society today.  It focuses on post-colonial critiques of human rights and the role of human rights as a tool of liberation. The Human Rights Act 1998 has defied its critics and has matured into an essential aspect of the UK’s legal landscape.You will learn by being involved in practical debates about Human Rights and the 1998 Act, such as the application of human rights to British armed forces overseas, and debates as to the future and whether it is important to have a Human Rights Act, what its future legal status should be, or whether it should be repealed.

Human Rights Law

Develop a detailed understanding of the fundamental legal principles of human rights law, within aspects of their social, institutional and cultural contexts.

Demonstrate an ability to critically evaluate and apply theoretical concepts, principles and rules of human rights law to complex legal problems and scenarios, with an analysis of potential arguments and clearly developed conclusions

Develop an ability to select, critically analyse and use a range of appropriate primary and secondary legal materials, with accurate legal referencing. 

Apply a sustained critique of potential arguments and developed conclusions to legal problems

Effectively communicate solutions to legal problems, arguments and analysis in a variety of forms within the context of human rights law.
