Assessment 1: Written Assignment

Document description. Students will complete a detailed document description, using an appropriate level of detail and specialist terminology.

Written Assignment

This module will help you to work with a range of sources, including archival materials, and apply relevant methodologies to interpreting and using them in your research. The module includes practical sessions in the University of Huddersfield archives (Heritage Quay), where you will be introduced to a range of manuscript and printed materials, and to online finding tools. Seminars will focus on a variety of methodological approaches to working with source materials.

Sources and Methods in Musicology

Synthesise theoretical ideas about methods and the use of source materials, and apply them to an independently chosen project.

Identify, analyse, and critique source materials in musicology, presenting findings using a high standard of written English.

Work independently to interpret and evaluate source materials using an appropriate methodology (PDP).

Understand key methodologies within advanced musicological scholarship.

Show a detailed knowledge and understanding of archives, and the ways in which their holdings are described in catalogues and other finding aids.

Show understanding of archival collections, and why different methods might be required for their use in academic contexts.

Present a professional-level document description, using a high standard of written English and specialist terminology.
