Formative feedback will be given verbally in Workshops where students will be able to begin applying and evaluating different research methods (summative assessment 1) as well as discussing their methods piloting (summative assessment 2). Formative feedback will also be given on students’ critical responses to set readings, prepared in advance of the weekly seminars.

On this module you’ll learn the particular methodologies connected to researching digital culture and social media. The module reflects on the varied ways that social media and online communities and behaviour have been researched in the humanities and you will learn how to use these methods yourself. You will explore the specific ethical issues that are brought up by researching environments like social media platforms. You will learn how to research apps with techniques such as the walkthrough method. You will develop an understanding of concepts such as digital ethnography and the significance of data visualisations. Relatedly, you will explore quantitative research methods regarding ‘big data’ and gain an understanding of the challenges which big data poses to shifting power relations between big tech companies, (digital) sociology and academic research.

be able to understand, to an advanced level, how social media platforms and digital culture more broadly can be researched to gain vital understandings of 			communities and populations; 

be able to critically recognise and apply the ethical ‘best practice’ linked to researching 	digital culture and social media.

be able to critically evaluate the strengths and limits of major quantitative and qualitative research methods, and apply this with originality in your own work.

be able to understand key research methodologies related to social media, critically evaluating current research and advanced scholarship.

be able to understand the ways in which data is organised and used, and the social and political implications thereof.

be able to formulate appropriate research questions and employ/assess appropriate methods and resources for exploring those questions, critiquing methodologies 	where relevant.
