This module acquaints students with the different theories and models which describe and explain how languages diversify and develop over the course of their history. Using English as a baseline, but also drawing upon other languages comparatively, students will explore descriptive methods employed in the fields of sociolinguistics and historical linguistics in order to chart variation and change across communities over time.

Language Variation and Change

have the ability to deduce and describe some features of variation and change to the structure (phonology, morphology, syntax) of English.

have the ability to apply theoretical knowledge to the analysis of written and spoken data.
