This module will explore literary texts from chosen periods within their historical context. The contributions of the cultural setting to the subject, structure, and presentation of literary texts will also be examined. A variety of modes of analysis and critical engagement will be employed.

have an understanding of the complex historical and cultural context including literary history, which informs and is represented in the literature of a given period.

be able to make use of critical and historical sources in an analysis of texts.
