Final Project proposing an imagined future or set of solutions for a particular aspect of musical culture, context, or practice, responding to an existing gap, shortcoming, problem, or constraint. The format may include a multimedia presentation, podcast, video documentary, a composition or folio of shorter compositions, extended essay, website, installation or gallery display, curation of a real or imagined music festival, performance or live event, or other project to be approved by the module leader.
Students enrolled in AHM3105 Advanced Composition may not submit a composition for this assessment.

Final Project Plan and Bibliography.  A detailed project plan and methodology outlining the subject matter and approach to be taken in the Final Project, as well as an extensive bibliography of relevant texts, recordings, websites, videos, etc.

Critical Analysis.
A critical examination of a single work from the 21st century (chosen from a list of relevant works supplied by the module tutors), its musical materials, its compositional/musical context, and any relevant issues of performance practice and audience engagement/reception. 

This module explores the major issues and materials of current musical thought and practice. You will draw on a wide range of styles and genres to examine the diversity of music in the 21st century, and you will focus in particular on some of the aesthetic challenges and debates raised by this diversity, as well as the social and cultural contexts for that music. 
Assessment is through coursework (100%), including a final project that provides opportunities for you to develop your own creative ways of demonstrating the findings from your independent research, including performance, composition, installations, multimedia presentations, blogs, websites, podcasts, documentaries, etc.

Music in the 21st Century

have the knowledge of the repertoire of the early 21st century within various approaches to art music (compositional materials, methods and techniques).

have the ability to critically evaluate information gained through new media (blogs, online discussion boards, podcasts, etc.).

have the ability to listen critically to recent music of a range of styles, both in live performances and on recording.

have the knowledge of the cross-fertilization between musical genres and styles, and an understanding of the influence of other art forms on current musical thought and practice.

have an awareness and understanding of the larger cultural and sociological contexts of current and recent music, including issues of audience reception, the distribution and dissemination of scores and recordings, and the relationship between 21st century ‘art music/concert music’ and a broader cultural context.

have the ability to plan, organise, and execute a major project examining current musical and cultural practice (PDP).
