<p>This module examines the history and memory of the French experience of World War II, focusing on the German Occupation, the Vichy Regime, French collaboration, and the development of internal and external resistance. You will use a broad range of primary and secondary source material to develop a cultural historical analysis of the era, rooted in the debates over silence, truth and representation. This module falls into the ‘Conflict’ and ‘Communities and Welfare’ research groups.</p>

be able to communicate clearly and concisely in a variety of ways with appropriate accurate referencing to a range of audiences.

be able to conduct a piece of detailed research and relate the findings of that research  
to wider historical discipline including ethical issues.


be able to work flexibly and imaginatively as an individual and in groups, as appropriate,  when faced with a variety of challenging tasks.

be able to initiate and plan a complex project, including interpreting a significant body of data.

be able to evaluate and interpret significant bodies of primary material including policy documents, speeches, letters, films, photos, quantitative data and qualitative sources such as diaries and memoirs, and the place of French cinema.

be able to demonstrate an appropriate use of information and digital literacy. 

be able to demonstrate a wide range of historical knowledge in depth, concerning experience, memory and historiography of the period 1939-1944 in France, enabling them to reflect on global citizenship.

be able to offer an increasingly independent perspective on historical debates over the ‘Vichy syndrome’ – the role of the French resistance, the impact of collaboration, and the consequences of the deportation of Jews from France.
