This is a special subject module in which you study aspects of medieval history in depth, focusing on contemporary narrative sources, both historical and literary, and including some consideration of related visual and material sources. You will also engage with the post-medieval representation of the Middle Ages in both academic and popular terms.
This will enable you to gain a better understanding of medieval concepts of the relationship between past and present, as well as between the world and the self. It will also allow you to explore the uses to which these have been put, both during the Middle Ages, and later.

History and Myth: Writing and Re-writing the Middle Ages

be able to conduct a piece of detailed research and relate the findings of that research  
to wider historical discipline including ethical issues.


be able to offer an increasingly independent perspective on historical interpretations relating to medieval understandings of society and individuals’ place within it; to post-medieval employments of these; and the ways in which medieval history has been and is communicated to a popular audience.

be able to evaluate and interpret significant bodies of primary material, including social, political, religious and culture sources of differing types (written, visual, archaeological remains, material culture).

be able to engage with enterprise, innovation and real world challenges.

be able to demonstrate the ability to reflect critically on career and personal development.

be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge in depth of the history and historiography of the Middle Ages, covering different themes, events and regions drawn from contrasting societies and cultures, enabling them to reflect on global citizenship.
