W.B. Yeats once commented to Ezra Pound that the work of a ‘minor poet’ failed to engage because it ‘lacked chaos’.  By this Yeats seems to have meant that the poet, although technically competent, had failed to develop an utterance that was an authentic expression of his inner life and being.  Liberating Poetic Chaos aims to enhance your poetic practice by enabling you to encounter the affective dimension of creativity that Yeats alludes to — and to consciously deploy the fruits of that encounter in  your own poetic work.  Informed by case studies of exemplary texts and poets, you will identify and explore the conjunction of objective and subjective factors in your lives which combine to form their unique ‘chaos’ — the source of your creativity.  In doing so, you will take the first steps on the road to finding your distinctive voice — and developing vision and ambition in your work.  You will undertake a range of analytical and writing activities and write a portfolio of poems that constitutes a distinctive expression of your developing chaos.

Liberating Poetic Chaos

Gain  understanding of the conjunction of objective and subjective factors in their own lives that form the chaos from which distinctive artistic utterance emerges, whilst continuing to develop expertise with the formal and technical aspects of poetry, focusing in particular on how these elements might function as a conduit for expression.

Expound, explain and evaluate their work with reference to its distinctive chaos, the forms and techniques deployed in the drafting and its relationship to the poets and texts studied.

Write distinctive and original poetry in a range of forms using a variety of techniques, matching these to vision, intention, theme and content as appropriate. 

Have knowledge and understanding of texts by a range of contemporary, modern and pre-20th century poets, and be able to identify and evaluate the characteristic elements of their expression and articulate how expression is enabled by and reflected in the deployment of form, technique and style.
