Assessment 1: Practical skills assessment

A range of learning activities (in class) creates on-going feedback in respect of Improvisation, Aural and Ensemble Performance. A formative portfolio of reflective tasks relating to the learning activities (equivalent to 200 words) is submitted at the end of term 1.

Performance Assessment

<p>This module will develop your practical musical skills through workshops on aural perception and general musicianship, improvisation, and ensemble performance. Through the module you will develop the ability to evaluate your own and others’ performances, as well as gaining an insight into practical music-making in a range of different contexts. The syllabus will cover a range of popular and classical music genres, and you will have the option to specialise where appropriate.</p>

be able to participate in an improvised performance showing awareness of good practice.

be aware of good ensemble practices as a performer, in relevant ensemble contexts 

be able to use critical and reflective approaches to evaluate their own and others’ performances.

be able to identify key harmonic and melodic relationships, describe the style and content of unfamiliar works, evaluate differences in performance style and approach, and analyse and realise rhythms.

aurally understand fundamental harmonic, rhythmic and melodic elements in relevant styles of music 

recognise the elements that make a successful improvisation and the relationship these have to other kinds of musical performance.

be able to work together with others in an ensemble and practice effective ensemble performance.
